Swindon Borough Council Keeps Its Promises

Swindon Borough Council has announced it has fulfilled four of the 50 Promises it made to local people and has made major inroads into achieving almost a dozen others.

The news was revealed at an extraordinary meeting of all councillors last night.

The 50 Promises were introduced a year ago so residents could measure for themselves the work of the local authority. The council has pledged to deliver all 50 Promises by the year 2010 which cover a wide range of the services it provides from education to leisure, transport and recycling.

The four promises it has already achieved are numbers:

10.     Establishment of a Young Peoples Forum

26.     Finding a permanent home for Swindon Dance

9.      (Phase one delivered) Making forms available via the internet.

21.     Launch of the local Sports Council.

The key achievements include starting work on the new library, town centre regeneration and significant improvements in the collection of council tax.

Cllr Peter Mallinson said: "This is an extremely exciting and challenging time for Swindon. For the first time in many years, wherever you look within our borough you will see major change and improvements taking place."

"The Conservatives 50 Promises to the people of Swindon and I'm delighted that already we've been able to fulfil four and move much of the way in achieving nearly a dozen others. We're on target to ensure all 50 are kept by our own deadline of 2010. Our residents deserve it and we will not let them down."
