Dont drop your defences after the floods
Rogue traders could target vulnerable householders following the recent floods, warns Swindon Borough Council Trading Standards.
Doorstep criminals may prey on victims by offering general building repairs, clear-up services, plumbing and sewerage repairs, dehumidifiers and decorating, say officers.
Householders may put themselves at serious risk of being ripped off by being duped into paying for work that was not necessary or paying extortionate prices for shoddy, incompetent work. Anyone who pays up front risks never seeing the trader or their money again.
Phil Thomas, Trading Standards Manager, said: Unfortunately there are many rogue traders out there that will take advantage of any situation in order to profit from other peoples misfortune.
In difficult or desperate times we understand it might sound tempting for householders to agree to have work done by anyone who knocks at the door. This might seem like the easy option but it is likely to end in tears.
Swindon Trading Standards Service has joined forces with Wiltshire Police to promote the message Stay Out Stranger in order to stamp out doorstep crime. The advice for householders is to keep the door shut if they do not recognise or are not expecting a caller.
The advice from Trading Standards is never to agree to have work done by someone who calls at the door. If work is needed it is important to get two or three written quotations and seek recommendations for a good local trader.
Anyone who is approached by a doorstep caller offering to work is asked to contact Swindon Trading Standards Service immediately on 01793 466155.
Consumers who need advice about work that has been carried out should contact Consumer Direct for free advice on 08454 040506.
Cllr Peter Mallinson said, "Be on your guard, there are some very nasty people who will take advantage of anyone if they think they can get away with it. If you have any doubts dont hesitate to say no and call the Police."
