15/10/07 - New Premises for Haircare

  Hairdresser Celebrates Progress In Regeneration

                      Of Cavendish Square

The rebirth of Cavendish Square is taking shape - and retailers have started moving into their new shops.

Chris Horsell is thrilled with the new premises for his hair salon, called Haircare, which has been in business since the square was first opened in 1963.

Chris, aged 49, said:  “It was my father Eric ' s business. I joined as an apprentice straight after leaving school and then became a partner. I've been running it ever since and have seen a lot of changes.

“Over the years the area has got rundown and needed total redevelopment. This is the start of a whole new beginning - a fresh image and better facilities. My new premises are great and I ' m really looking forward serving my clients in improved surroundings."

Haircare is among five businesses which have opened in their new premises this week.

Progress on the transformation of Cavendish Square, being carried out by Leehampton Developments in partnership with Swindon Borough Council, is going well. The former Kwik Save block has been demolished and some of the new retail units have been finished, marking the completion of phase one.

The next regeneration stage involves works in the central block area, which will feature a bigger, better library.

The new face of Cavendish Square, which includes a rejuvenated shopping centre, revamped community facilities, enhanced school facilities and 173 new homes is on target to be completed during 2009.

Jim Scott, Managing Director of Leehampton Developments, said: "We are delighted to have delivered the first phase of retail units on schedule in accordance with the development programme. Demolition works are well advanced on the next phase of development which will see the construction of the new supermarket, pharmacy and cafe units - scheduled for completion in mid 2008."

Swindon Borough Council is therefore on track to fulfil part of Promise number 39, of its 50 promises to residents to be achieved by 2010 - "We will redevelop a range of other sites including ... Cavendish Square."

Cllr Renard, Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Social Care said:  "I am pleased that local people will now be able to directly benefit from the exciting changes taking place at Cavendish Square. It is great that residents can now start making use of some of the new facilities and get a taste of what is to come in future."

Cllr Peter Mallinson said, "As a member of the Regeneration Board I am pleased to see Chris has now occupied his new premises.  I have always had my hair cut at Haircare and have got to know the staff well over the years I have been going there.  I wish you, your staff and your business well in your new premises."
